Does hypnotherapy and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) work?

Hypnotherapy and EFT are hugely effective because they are used to uncover the root of the issue and then help you to process the emotion that is gluing that behaviour or the trigger (event or experience) in place. Once we have identified the problem,  work with you to help you release it and letting go of the emotion that relates to the issue.

We can do this through tapping (EFT) and freeing the energy that is keeping the memory and emotion stuck or through hypnosis. In hypnosis your body and mind are relaxed, open to suggestion and able to process memories, traumas, or experiences that may have previously triggered fight or flight. When you are in fight or flight it’s impossible to safely process old memories because the rational part of your brain shuts down in preparation for you to act – fighting or fleeing. In hypnosis, all parts of the brain are relaxed, enabling unhelpful memories, traumas and experiences to pass between the short-term memory and the long-term and releasing the trapped emotion.

Can hypnotherapy help me change my habits?

Our behaviour and habits are programmed and stored within our subconscious mind. Growing up (between the ages of 0 and 8) we are in the equivalent of a hypnotic trance, learning about our world and storing patterns of living and being in our mind. Our brains are like little sponges, soaking up all of our experiences which then create our perceptions of the world, society, other people and ourselves.

Going into an hypnotic trance enables us to connect to that part of our minds and re-wire the way we think and feel based on our personal goals and desires.

I think I’ll feel a bit vulnerable in hypnosis, I’ve watched people act like chickens under hypnosis on TV…..

The important thing for you to know is that if I suggest something while you’re in hypnosis and you don’t agree you will lift out of trance. As a trainee hypnotherapist I learned how to hypnotise someone without the use of scripts. I completely tailor my words, metaphors and suggestions based on what you have told me and what you want to achieve from the session. Before the hypnosis begins, I will ask you a number of questions and then use your own words to ensure that it fully aligns with your expectations. We’re going to become a team, a partnership, that’s how the magic happens.

I find it hard to relax, will hypnosis work for me?

I believe that everyone has the innate ability to relax, it’s built in to our bodies naturally. I have worked with many people who find it ‘impossible’ to relax but have experienced a beautifully calming hypnosis for 45 minutes in our first session.

I can’t see how tapping on my body is going to help me emotionally?

I know it sounds bizarre right? But it is wonderfully effective. Focusing on the issue while tapping on the EFT points will enable you to tune into the energy, the emotion, the sensation and the feeling of the problem. This energy becomes your roadmap and compass for the rest of the session. Once you connect with what it is you’re feeling I will help you to process the memory or feeling. The majority of the time the issue, emotion or problem that surfaces highlights a physical sensation. I work with you to identify what this physical sensation is and what it represents. We will then explore how this sensation changes during the remainder of the session until it completely shifts and leaves the body. My clients always mention how it feels like a weight has been lifted, how they now feel very differently now that they’re not carrying the energy of the problem around with them any longer.

Do I have to know exactly what the problem is to be able to solve it?

No. Often, how we behave, how we feel and how we react to things is triggered by something buried deep within our subconscious. Growing up, we are shaped by our experiences, our parents, our carers, our teachers and our friends, who all have the power to influence how we feel about ourselves and what we are and what we are not capable of. These self-limiting beliefs can affect our happiness, how content we feel and they can also fuel anxiety and depression. My role is to help you unravel the beliefs that are creating the emotional and physical obstacles in your life and help you to overcome them.

Some problems may also be created through trauma, an experience or set of circumstances that have left you feeling uneasy and anxious. Hypnotherapy and EFT are wonderful techniques for helping you process and let go of these events so that you can move forward in your life.

Do I need to choose a type of therapy before we start the session?

Many of my clients inquire about hypnotherapy initially as this is becoming a well-known and respected therapy. In therapeutic practices it has become far more mainstream over the last few years. I like to think of the treatments I offer as a treasure chest of tools that I blend with your needs during each session. Sometimes the goal of the session will be best supported by hypnosis, at other times I will use EFT to help you discover information, experiences and memories you need to work on to solve the problem.

How long do the sessions last?

I always recommend 90 minutes per session. The first session can range between 90 minute and two hours. I believe that it’s very important to take the time we need to ensure that you are relaxed and feel empowered to work through the issue or problem thoroughly without worrying about time-frames.

Do I need to set a goal for myself before working with you?

I will chat with you about your motivation to work with me ahead of our first session and then when we meet, understand more about what you would like to achieve. Focusing on a goal will give you direction. I will also help you to break that down and create checkpoints and smaller goals so we can quickly and easily identify progress and changes.

I worry that I will feel worse after having a session, bringing up the past doesn’t make me feel good

This is a common worry and completely natural. I tailor the session to ensure that the techniques and tools we use support, strengthen nurture you. We don’t have to dive straight in. A big part of what I do, is helping you to build resilience and emotionally recharge your batteries.

Sometimes, at the very beginning it may be better for you to have a session which enables you to share a little more about what you want to achieve and then enjoy some beautiful guided meditation and hypnosis. Or try out some EFT on a little something that bothered you in the week that still seems to be annoying you and see where that takes you.

There is no pressure, no rush, there is enough of that in the world today, working on yourself is an investment and gift to yourself. I will regularly remind you of this.

How many sessions will I need?

As many as it takes. Everyone is very different and no two issues are ever the same. Sometimes it may take one or two sessions, for others we may work together for a number of months.

All our sessions will always be goal-orientated, the most important thing is that you feel you are moving at the pace that feels right for you.

Will I need to do anything in between sessions

I will teach you how to tap so that you can use this daily as and when you need too. At points I may set you some relevant homework tailored to your goal. I also highly recommend journalling, this is a great way of recording the changes as you experience them. I find that the people that continue to work on themselves outside of our sessions move forwards towards their goal at a faster pace.

Is is certain that I will feel better and resolve all my issues by working with you?

I’m afraid that I can’t give you that guarantee and encourage you to leg it from any therapist that says they can.

To ensure you get the most out of the sessions, honesty is absolutely key, your goals must be clear and straightforward communication is essential.
